Cities of the future

Remember the arcologies in Sim City? Those huge high-density enclosed cities with their built-in "stabilizer" jets to combat high winds? I always wondered if you hit some magic benchmark of development they would take off into space, becoming colony ships. Never happened while I played the game.

Futuristic architecture gets me very excited. Enclosed habitats the size of cities, with self-sustainable systems, are hypothetical at the moment but a staple of science fiction. These structures use 3D space efficiently, instead of the mostly 2D world we currently live in. They make economical use of transportation and energy, and incorporate climate control, air and water purification, sewerage systems, etc. One hopes that if and when they become a reality, they'll be built with important features such as recycling and shared resources in mind.

Pyramid City, a proposed construction project over Tokyo Bay, would house 750,000 people. The movie Blade Runner was partial inspiration for this structure.

Seoul Commune 2026 - organically shaped towers are made of glass topped with a textile that allows the growth of vines and other plants. The building components are stacked dome-, cone- and cylindrical-shaped modules. Count me in!
